What is CNC milling?

CNC Turning Classification

Hard turning – A process designed to replace grinding processes used for hardening materials.
Grooving and end grooving – The process of cutting slots of predetermined depth to the side or face of the workpiece.
Drilling – Mainly used to remove materials from the workpiece from the inside. More advanced CNC lathes can stop the workpiece rotation, drilling or milling away from the center or cross center to the workpiece.
Boring – The process of expanding pre-drilling with a single point tool.
Reaming – The process of expanding pre-drilling with a multi-groove tool designed to cut tool diameters.

Difference between turning and milling

1.Different machining method

Generally, Turning machining is special for round, shafts, sleeves, disks, cushions parts. Mainly is horizontal machining. Also large lathe is vertical and other machining forms. There are usually a cutter holder to fix the cutter. And machining form is generally the cutter feeds automatically. Mainly movement is the part rotating.

CNC Turning available for internal holes, threads, and knurling machining (low-speed machining). Also it can be solved with complex rotary ball-shape or round shape feature machining.

Milling machining, machining method is opposite from CNC turning. The main movement is the cutter rotation, while the part is feeds movement. Milling is to fix the blank(rough material) with a high-speed rotating milling cutter to move on the blank(rough material) to cut out the required shapes and features. Traditional milling is common used to simple shapes/features, such as profile and grooves. CNC milling machine can process complex shapes and features.

2.Different (structure) parts.

Turning machining is processing the rotating parts (round shape). Clamped the parts on the main shaft by a three-jaw chuck and rotating with high speed. Then, use a turning cutter to move around the busbar to cut out the part profiles. CNC Turning available for internal holes, threading, and knurling machining (low-speed machining). Also it can be solved with complex rotary ball-shape or round shape feature machining.

Milling machining is fixed the blank(rough material), and with a high-speed rotating milling cutter to move on the blank(rough material) to cut out the required shapes and features. Traditional milling is common used to simple shapes/features, such as profile and grooves. CNC milling machine can process complex shapes and features.
Simply speaking, Turning is moving parts with fixed cutter, while Milling is moving cutter with fixed parts.

1. EDM and Wire EDM Machining

EDM is an important auxiliary manufacturing process of CNC machining, often used in mold manufacturing, but also for some special structure of prototype machining. Using conductive graphite or copper electrodes immersed in the dielectric, when applied with a high voltage current, sparks are generated on the copper tool wall, etching away excess material and fulfilling the customer’s critical radius angle requirements.

EDM is mainly used for machining parts with complex shapes, deep holes, deep cavities, deep grooves, narrow and deep slot , machining various metal materials, such as aluminium plain steel and so on. Wire EDM is also very suitable for the production of geometrically complex high-precision gears.

EDM machining accuracy:

2. Manual Milling Machining

Manual milling is a widely used machine tools, manual milling machine can process plane (horizontal plane, vertical plane), Slot (key slot, T-Slots, dovetail slot, etc.), can be applied for inner hole processing also. When the manual milling machine is working, the workpiece will be fixed on worktable or clamping fixture of index head, then cutters start rotating with worktable moving until the workpiece completed the production with required machining surface. Manual milling processing without request computer programming, only according to 2D drawings to find the benchmark processing of part. Usually used for auxiliary processing of die parts manufacturing, as well as customized parts.

3. Manual Grinding Machining

The manual grinding machine can process with higher hardness materials, such as hardened steel, hard alloy, etc. It can work with high precision and very smooth surface roughness (up to Ra 0.04).

1.Cylindrical grinder machine: It is a common and basic series, mainly used for grinding the external surface of cylindrical and conical objects.
2.Internal grinder machine: It is a common and basic series also, mainly used for grinding the internal surface of cylindrical and conical objects. Also can be applied for internal/external grinding of ball shape objects.
3.Surface grinding machine: Mainly used for grinding flat surface of workpiece.
4.Tool grinding machine: Mainly used for tools’ grinding.
5.Special grinding machine: Mainly use for grinding some special parts, different parts request different grinding machine to process, such as spline grinder ,Crank grinder, cam grinder, gear grinder, thread grinder , curve grinder and so on.

4.Drilling Machining

Drilling machine mainly use drills to process holes on the workpiece. Drills start high-speed rotating and bullheaded down to the surface of workpiece till the holes achieved. The structure of drilling machine quite simple, and machining accuracy not tight, can use for drill through-hole, blind hole. Change other special cutters can achieve expansion, dimpling, reaming, threading and so on. Drilling machine is indispensable equipment for machinery manufacturing and various repair shopes.

5.Deep hole Drilling Machining

Deep hole drilling machine mainly use for drill the hole which the depth bigger than the diameter (For example the hole with 10mm diameter and 300mm depth). For discharge the scraps smoothly and avoiding the deep drilling machine too huge generally adopt horizontal layout, Equipped with coolant apparatus (Cooling liquid transported from inside of drills to the cutting location), and equipped with periodic withdraw drills device for well discharge the scraps.

6.Tapping Machining

Tapping machine divided into drilling & tapping machine, reaming tapping machine and so on. Automatic tapping machine with highest degree of automation, set up parameters before processing, with efficient production and cost saving greatly. About tolerance, unless otherwise specified, For CNC milling and CNC turning parts, we follow DIN-2768-1-fine tolerance standard; For vacuum casting and sheet metal parts, we follow DIN-2768-1-medium tolerance standard; For assembly parts to be welded, we follow DIN-2768-1- coarse tolerance;
Before starting machining, our programming engineer, production engineer and quality engineer will discuss the machining plan of the product, whether the tolerance can be achieved, and the testing fixtures and tools needed. For parts that need to be manufactured on multiple surfaces and require high precision, we will test them while machining and prepare testing fixtures according to requirements to to ensure accuracy.

What is 3axis CNC machining？

Machining where a workpiece is machined by a rotating tool with computer controlled movement in 3 axes.The workpiece is clamped onto a flat table and machined by a rotating tool provided with cutting inserts. Positioning of tools and/or work table is done by a CNC program which controls the drive in the X, Y and Z directions. In this way, the tool can be moved along the bottom or on the workpiece surface. The inserts removes material by chip breaking.
The clamping in combination with the three axes provides a limited possibility of processing several sides without reclamping.

Fixtures for CNC machining are very important. Fixture design is generally in parts machining process in accordance with the specific requirements of one process. In the process of formulating the technology, we will take the workability of fixture into consideration, and when designing the fixture, modification suggestions can be put forward to the process if necessary. The design quality of fixture should be measured by whether it can steadily ensure the processing quality of the workpiece, improve production efficiency, reduce production costs, convenient chip removal, safe operation, easy maintenance and so on.

The basic principles of fixture design:

1.To meet the stability and reliability of workpiece positioning in the process
2.There is sufficient load or clamping force to ensure that the workpiece on the fixture processing process smoothly.
3.Meet the requirements of simple and fast operation in the clamping process
4.Fragile parts must be easily replaceable, and it is best not to use other tools when conditions are sufficient

Basic knowledge of fixture design

4.Good performance fixture should have enough strength and stiffness, operation should be simple, labor-saving, safe and reliable. Under the premise of objective conditions and economic applicability, pneumatic, hydraulic and other mechanical clamping devices should be used as far as possible to reduce the labor intensity of operators. Fixture should also be convenient for chip removal, When necessary, the chip removal structure can be set up to prevent the chip from destroying the positioning of the workpiece and damaging the tool, and prevent the chip from accumulating a lot of heat and causing the deformation of the process system.
5.Cost-efficient fixture should adopt standard components and standard structure as much as possible, and strive to have simple structure and easy to manufacture, so as to reduce the manufacturing cost. Therefore, the design should consider order volume and capacity situation, make technical and economic analysis of fixture scheme if necessary to improve the economic benefit of fixture in production.

Problems to be considered in fixture design

Fixture design structure is simple generally, especially with the use of hydraulic fixture changing, the original mechanical structure is greatly simplified, if the design process is not considered in detail , unnecessary trouble will appear:

a)Working allowance of workpiece to be processed.If the blank size is too large, it will interfere with the fixture. So before the fixture design blank drawings must be available.
b)The chip removal smoothness of the fixture. Due to the limitation of machine tool processing space, the gap between parts and parts should be as small as possible, then the iron chip generated in the process of processing in dead corner deposit of the fixture will be ignored sometimes, including chip fluid flow is not smooth, which bring inconvenience to subsequent processing. Therefore, in initial design of fixture should take these problems into consideration, after all, fixture is used to improve efficiency and make operation convenient.
c)The overall openness of the fixture. Ignoring the fixture openness makes it difficult to install and mounted for the operator.Time-consuming and laborious, it is a design big taboos.

d)The basic theoretical of fixture design. Each fixture has to undergo countless clamping and unclamping actions, it could meet the requirements at beginning, but the fixture should have its accuracy lifespan, so do not design the fixture that contrary to the machining principle. Even if it is lucky they can be short use. While they must be poor lifespan and cyclic use. A good design should stand the temper of time.
e)Positioning components’ replace-ability. The positioning components are worn severely. So we have to consider about the fixture’s quick and convenient replacement. It is better not to design a larger fixture.
Accumulation of fixture design experience is very important. Sometimes, design is a individual thing, but it is related thing in actual application, so good design is a process of continuous accumulation and summarization.
